What Renters Should Know About Theft Coverage and Documentation Requirements

Renters insurance covers more than most people expect, and theft coverage is one of its most valuable components. Whether someone breaks into your apartment or a thief grabs your bag at a coffee shop, your personal property coverage may help replace what was taken.

How Theft Coverage Works in a Renters Policy

Personal property coverage in a renters policy typically may help cover your belongings against theft, both at home and away from it. This means electronics stolen from your car or luggage taken during travel may be covered, subject to your policy limits and deductible. Keep in mind that for losses away from home, some policies apply an off-premises sublimit before any category sublimits and your deductible are applied. Coverage applies to named perils, so theft must be listed, and most standard policies include it.

Some categories, including jewelry, cash, firearms and collectibles, often carry sublimits that are lower than your overall personal property limit. If you own high-value items in those categories, ask our team about a scheduled personal property endorsement.

Documentation That Strengthens Your Claim

Good records are the foundation of a smooth claims process. Before you ever need to file, consider keeping:

  • A home inventory with photos or video of your belongings
  • Receipts, serial numbers and purchase records for electronics and appliances
  • Appraisals for jewelry, art or other valuables
  • A secure, off-site backup of all documentation, such as cloud storage

When a theft occurs, file a police report promptly.
